Phillies get two in 10th, win series from Cubs

Trea Turner went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Aaron Nola threw seven solid innings as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-1 in 10 innings on Sunday.

Nola allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Jose Alvarado (3-0) struck out one in a clean ninth inning to earn the win, and Jordan Romano did the same in the 10th for his second save of the season.

The Phillies took the final two games of the three-game series.

Cubs reliever Julian Merryweather (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in two-thirds of one inning. Starter Jameson Taillon gave up one run on five hits while fanning a pair in seven innings.

Philadelphia took the lead in the top of the 10th against reliever Julian Merryweather (0-1). With Nick Castellanos as the automatic runner at second, J.T. Realmuto and Max Kepler each walked to load the bases, and Alec Bohm followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead. After a fielder’s choice grounder nabbed Realmuto at home, Bryson Stott walked to reload the bases, and Turner’s single to third made it 3-1.

Merryweather was charged with two runs (one earned) on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Starter Jameson Taillon gave up one run on five hits while fanning a pair in seven innings.

Taillon and Nola were stellar after each gave up a run early, with only one baserunner allowed between them from the bottom of the third through the end of the sixth. That came on Miguel Amaya’s two-out single in the bottom of the fifth.

Philadelphia didn’t get on base again until the top of the seventh.

Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. With two out, Nico Hoerner lifted a fly ball double to center field. Pete Crow-Armstrong followed with a double off the right field wall that drove in Hoerner.

Philadelphia responded in the top of the third. With one out, Bryson Stott connected on a fastball on the first pitch, sending it into the right field corner for a triple. Turner brought him home with a ground ball single to left to tie it 1-1.

Taillon earned his 1,000th career strikeout when he got Stott swinging to begin the game.
