Angels GM: Anthony Rendon needs hip surgery, out ‘long term’

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon, who has played in just 257 games across five seasons in Anaheim, now needs hip surgery and is going to be out “long term,” general manager Perry Minasian told reporters Wednesday.

Rendon, 34, had a setback during his rehab, making it unclear if and when he’ll be able to play for the Angels again.

He is entering the sixth season of a seven-year, $245 million contract. He has not played in more than 58 games in a season since joining the Angels in 2020 due to injuries to his left knee, right hip, left hamstring, groin, left wrist and back.

Rendon is a lifetime .280 hitter with 158 home runs and 671 RBIs in 12 seasons, but only 22 of those homers have come with the Angels. He played his first seven seasons with Washington, earning All-Star honors and leading the majors with 126 RBIs in his final season with the Nationals in 2019.

The Angels last week signed third baseman Yoan Moncada to a $5 million deal.
