Diamondbacks top Brewers to keep pace in wild-card race

Ketel Marte had his career-high 33rd homer and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added a solo shot as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks kept pace in the National League wild-card race with a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

The Diamondbacks snapped a 4-all tie with three runs in the sixth. Gurriel, activated earlier in the day off the injured list, opened the inning with his 18th homer. Eugenio Suarez and Gabriel Moreno had consecutive one-out singles. Jared Koenig relieved and walked Geraldo Perdomo to load the bases. Corbin Carroll followed with an RBI groundout to make it 6-4.

Marte was walked intentionally to reload the bases, and pinch hitter Randal Grichuk walked to force in a run.

Zac Gallen (13-6) allowed four runs, all on three homers in the fifth. He gave up seven hits, striking out five and walking one in five innings. Kevin Ginkel, Justin Martinez and Ryan Thompson each followed with a scoreless inning. A.J. Puk struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.

Arizona (86-68) entered two games behind the San Diego Padres for the NL’s top wild-card spot. The Mets dropped a game behind the Diamondbacks after their 12-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies

Milwaukee (88-66), which has lost two straight to Arizona since clinching the NL Central on Wednesday, erased a 4-0 deficit with three fifth-inning homers. Joey Ortiz started the onslaught with a one-out solo shot, his 11th. Jackson Chourio singled with two outs and William Contreras followed with his 23rd homer. Garrett Mitchell hit his eighth homer to tie it.

DL Hall (1-2) took the loss after giving up Gurriel’s homer to lead off the sixth. Hall allowed four runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Marte staked the Diamondbacks to a 1-0 lead in the second with his one-out homer to right.

The Diamondbacks scored twice in the second on an RBI single by Perdomo and Carroll’s sacrifice fly to go in front 3-0.

Brewers starter Colin Rea lasted just four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
