Giants’ five-run first beats Yankees in rain-shortened game

Jung Hoo Lee hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning off Marcus Stroman as the visiting San Francisco Giants withstood heavy rain to roll to a 9-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night in a game that was called during the top of the sixth.

Lee and Lamonte Wade Jr. drove in three runs apiece as the Giants mixed 11 walks and six hits to win for the 10th time in 13 games. Rodney Ray (3-0) picked up the win despite struggling with the steady rain at times. He allowed one run on two hits in four innings, but walked four while fanning seven.

Austin Wells contributed an RBI double in the second for the Yankees, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Stroman (0-1) allowed five runs and four hits before getting chased with two outs in the first for his shortest career start.

Following an initial 27-minute delay due to rain that persisted throughout, the Giants used a big first inning to set the tone.

In his first plate appearance since his walk-off homer Wednesday against Cincinnati, Mike Yastrzemski doubled on the game’s first pitch. After Willy Adames walked, Lee made it 3-0 by blasting a 1-2 belt-high sinker into the right-center field seats.

Following walks to Matt Chapman and Heliot Ramos, Wade ripped a double to the right-field corner for a 5-0 lead.

Wade also drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, when the rain intensified and necessitated two meetings on the mound between the umpires, New York manager Aaron Boone and head groundskeeper Dan Cunningham.

After Wade’s walk, the tarp was put on the field and the game went into a second rain delay before being called after about 20 minutes.

Patrick Bailey contributed an RBI double as Giants added three in the fifth off New York relievers Ian Hamilton and Tim Hill to continue their best start since the 2003 season.

The Giants padded the lead on bases-loaded groundout by Wilmer Flores before Chapman scored on a wild pitch by Hill ahead of Bailey’s double.
