Jackson Chourio (2 HRs, 5 RBIs) powers Brewers past Reds

Jackson Chourio belted a pair of home runs and matched a career high with five RBIs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-2 rout of the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

Chad Patrick (1-0), making just his second major league start, earned his first win by holding Cincinnati to two hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking three.

Three relievers closed out the game for Milwaukee, allowing three hits and one run over the final 3 2/3 innings as the Brewers struck out 11 Cincinnati batters.

Chourio got the scoring underway in the third with a sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI single from Christian Yelich to make it 2-0.

Chourio then broke open the game with a three-run homer off reliever Sam Moll in a five-run fourth, which featured a pair of Milwaukee bunts and a passed ball by Cincinnati’s Austin Wynns before the long ball.

In the seventh, Chourio followed with a 415-foot homer to left-center off Ian Gibaut, giving him his second career multi-homer game.

Brice Turang went 2-for-4 Sunday with a double and two runs. Turang has recorded a hit in all 10 Milwaukee games this season.

Milwaukee captured three of the four games in the weekend series to continue its recent domination of Cincinnati. The Brewers won for the 40th time in the last 55 games between the two NL Central division rivals.

Milwaukee has also won the last 11 series between the two clubs, 12 of the last 13 and 15 of 17 dating back to the 2021 season.

Carson Spiers (0-2) made the start for Cincinnati and suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings striking out three and walking one.

Spencer Steer belted his first homer of the year for the Reds, who have lost all three series to open the season. Steer’s solo homer came off Patrick to lead off the fifth inning.

A day after breaking out with 11 runs, Cincinnati reverted to its offensive struggles. The Reds had just five hits and have scored 28 runs in three wins while pushing across just 11 runs in seven losses.
