Mets to retire David Wright’s No. 5

The New York Mets announced Monday that they will retire David Wright’s No. 5 and induct their former captain into the team Hall of Fame this summer.

The Mets will hold a ceremony for the seven-time All-Star prior to their July 19 game against the Cincinnati Reds, almost exactly 21 years after he made his Major League debut.

Wright, 42, batted .296 with 242 home runs and 970 RBIs in 14 seasons with the Mets. He was also a two-time Gold Glove winner at third base.

“Excited, humbled, honored are just some of the words to describe the thought of this summer’s Mets Hall of Fame induction and seeing #5 up at Citi Field next to some of the best players to ever play the game,” Wright said in a statement.

The Mets drafted Wright No. 38 overall in the 2001 draft and he made his MLB debut on July 21, 2004, at home vs. Montreal.
