Royals snap six-game losing streak at Tigers’ expense

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a 10th-inning sacrifice fly as the visiting Kansas City Royals snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

Mark Canha and Drew Waters each had two hits and an RBI for the Royals. Vinnie Pasquantino drove in the other run and Carlos Estevez (1-0) pitched the last two innings to get the win.

Starter Michael Wacha gave up two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked none.

Detroit’s Tarik Skubal, who didn’t give up a run in his previous two starts, allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Zach McKinstry had three hits and two RBIs and Kerry Carpenter supplied three hits with an RBI for Detroit.

The Royals generated two runs in the second. Maikel Garcia, Hunter Renfroe and Pasquantino rapped consecutive singles to score one run. With two out, Waters knocked in the second run with another single.

Detroit tied it 2-2 in the fifth. Colt Keith and Trey Sweeney had back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. After Javier Baez struck out and Gleyber Torres popped out, Carpenter singled to right to bring home Keith. McKinstry then singled to center to score Sweeney.

With Daniel Lynch IV on the mound in the seventh, the Tigers gained the lead. Baez led off with a single and Torres hit into a fielder’s choice. Carpenter smacked a single before McKinstry knocked in Torres with a single to left. John Schreider replaced Lynch and walked Torkelson to load the bases. Riley Greene grounded into a double play to leave the score 3-2.

The Royals tied it in the eighth against Tommy Kahnle. Witt reached on a two-base error by Baez and scored on Canha’s single to center.

Kansas City took a 4-3 lead in the 10th. Waters, the automatic runner, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Witt’s sacrifice fly.

Ryan Kreidler, Detroit’s automatic runner, moved to third on Torkelson’s one-out fly ball. Greene was walked intentionally before Dillon Dingler popped out to end the game.
