Surging Mets pummel Rangers 14-2

Brandon Nimmo homered and had four RBIs, DJ Stewart smacked a three-run shot and the New York Mets steamrolled the Texas Rangers 14-2 on Monday night at Arlington, Texas.

Francisco Lindor went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, and Pete Alonso and Francisco Alvarez both had three hits and two RBIs as New York won its sixth straight game to match a season best.

Mark Vientos and Nimmo each had three hits and two runs as the Mets racked up 22 hits overall while prevailing for the 12th in its last 16 games.

It was the first time New York reached the 20-hit mark since having 23 against the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 15, 2019. The Mets had 17 singles, three doubles and two homers on Monday and have outscored the opposition 45-16 during their winning streak.

David Peterson (3-0) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings for New York. He struck out six and walked three.

Robbie Grossman hit a two-run homer for the Rangers, who have lost nine of their past 13 games.

Texas starter Jon Gray (2-3) was clobbered for nine runs and 11 hits in three-plus innings. He struck out two and walked none.

New York’s first eight hits off Gray were singles before the ninth was Stewart’s homer in the second inning for a 7-0 lead.

In the second, Vientos, Jeff McNeil and Lindor all singled for New York’s first run of the inning. Nimmo and Alonso added run-scoring singles to make it 4-0 before Stewart hit his fifth homer of the season.

The Rangers got on the board in the third when Grossman ripped a two-run homer to left. It was his first of the season.

But the Mets needed just two pitches to get the runs back in the fourth. Lindor singled on Gray’s first pitch and Nimmo slugged a two-run blast on the next, Gray’s last of the night. The homer was Nimmo’s eighth of the season.

Lindor had a run-scoring double and Nimmo followed with an RBI single in the fifth to make it 11-2. Alvarez had an RBI single in the sixth to boost the margin to 10.
