Tarik Skubal excels as Tigers complete sweep of Orioles

Tarik Skubal struck out 11 in six dominant innings and the host Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 7-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Skubal (3-2) held the Orioles to four hits without a walk in a 91-pitch effort. Sean Guenther had three strikeouts in two innings. Kenta Maeda pitched the ninth for Detroit, which has four shutout victories this season.

Gleyber Torres drove in three runs while Javier Baez scored two runs and knocked in two more as Detroit won its fourth straight game. Jace Jung and Dillon Dingler had the other Tigers RBIs.

Baltimore starter Dean Kremer (2-4) gave up five runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Orioles have dropped six of their last seven games.

Skubal struck out the side in the second inning. The Tigers then gave him some run support in the bottom of the inning.

Spencer Torkelson and Trey Sweeney drew walks. With two out, Baez lined a Kremer curveball for a double to left field, scoring both runners.

In the third, the Orioles had a threat when Jorge Mateo led off with a single. Shortstop Sweeney dove to snare Jackson Holliday’s liner. Mateo then stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Skubal struck out Gunnar Henderson to leave Mateo stranded.

Baltimore had two base runners in the fourth on a single and hit by pitch. A fielder’s choice and another strikeout, this time against Heston Kjerstad, kept the Orioles off the scoreboard.

Detroit made it 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Baez drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on Kerry Carpenter flyout to right field. Torres drove in Baez with a single to left.

The Tigers added two more runs in the next inning. Zach McKinstry had a leadoff double. He moved up on a long flyout and scored on Jung’s two-out single to center. After Cionel Perez replaced Kremer, Sweeney and Dingler hit back-to-back singles to bring home Jung.

Torres ripped a two-run double off Grant Wolfram in the seventh. That followed a leadoff single from Baez and a walk to pinch-hitter Justyn-Henry Malloy.
