Tigers continue Orioles’ woes in Game 2 for DH sweep

Detroit’s Riley Greene hammered a three-run homer to add to the misery for Baltimore Orioles pitcher Charlie Morton and the host Tigers went on to win 6-2 on Saturday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Spencer Torkelson provided a two-run double and the Tigers won for the fourth time in their last five games. Brant Hurter (1-0) was the winning pitcher with 2 1/3 innings of relief.

The Orioles have been swept in 14 of their last 27 doubleheaders without a sweep in their favor during a stretch that extends almost nine years. Gunnar Henderson had two of Baltimore’s six hits, but it marked the team’s fifth loss in six games.

The Tigers won 4-3 in the afternoon opener following Friday night’s rainout.

Tigers starter Keider Montero, in his third outing of the season, went 4 1/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Orioles used Morton in relief after Keegan Akin pitched 1 2/3 innings. But it looked like previous outings this spring for the veteran right-hander as Morton (0-6) surrendered Greene’s blast in the third inning.

Morton entered the day with a 10.89 earned-run average, and that mark was at 10.36 following his 3 2/3-inning stint. He allowed three hits and issued five walks while striking out three.

It was Greene’s fourth homer of the season but his first since April 4.

Seranthony Dominguez was charged with Detroit’s other three runs.

Baltimore scored first on Henderson’s third-inning double. The Orioles trimmed the deficit to 3-2 on Ramon Laureano’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Torkelson’s two-run double in the seventh stretched the lead to 5-2, and the Tigers tacked on another run on Zach McKinstry’s two-out double. In the first game, Torkelson homered to end a four-game stretch without an RBI.

McKinstry went 2-for-4 as the only Tiger with more than one hit.

Akin made his first start since 2023 after 66 bullpen appearances last year and 12 this season.
