Wilyer Abreu, Red Sox overpower Blue Jays

Wilyer Abreu hit a three-run blast to lead a five-run home run barrage, and the visiting Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 10-2 on Tuesday night. .

Jarren Duran, Alex Bregman, Kristian Campbell and Rafael Devers added solo home runs for the Red Sox in the opener of the three-game series. Bregman and Abreu each had three hits.

Boston got seven strong innings from left-hander Garrett Crochet (3-2), who allowed two runs, four hits and three walks while striking out six.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run home run for the Blue Jays, who were returning from a 1-5 road trip.

Duran led off the game against right-hander Bowden Francis (2-4) by knocking an 0-2 fastball over the wall in right.

Bregman followed with a one-out homer to left on a hanging 0-2 splitter.

Campbell led off the second inning with a homer to right on a 2-1 fastball.

Devers led off the third with a home run on a blast to deep right on a 3-2 splitter. Bregman and Trevor Story followed with singles and scored when Abreu hammered a 2-0 curveball to center for a homer.

Bo Bichette doubled into the right-field corner with two out in the third and scored when Guerrero homered to center on a 1-0 fastball up in the strike zone.

Francis allowed seven runs and five home runs among eight hits in three innings.

Toronto center fielder Daulton Varsho made his season debut after shoulder surgery and made a spectacular, rolling catch when he reached up after falling down on Duran’s fly to the warning track in the fourth.

Blue Jays reliever Dillon Tate walked Abreu and Campell with one out in the fifth and was replaced by Mason Fluharty, who ended the inning on Triston Casas’s double-play grounder.

Boston added a run in the eighth against Casey Lawrence — recently claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners — on two singles and Duran’s RBI groundout.

Boston added two runs in the ninth on two singles, Campbell’s RBI double and Casas’s RBI groundout.

Boston’s Luis Guerrero and Brennan Bernardino pitched a perfect eighth and ninth, respectively.

Toronto optioned right-hander Paxton Schultz and infielder Will Wagner to Triple-A Buffalo.
